PROFILE: Operations Engineer – Senior level

WORK MODE: Near-site: 2 days/week on-site in Ispra (VA), Italy

BACKGROUND & MANDATE

DID S.r.l. is looking for a Senior Operations Engineer for a near-site assignment with a European Institution in Ispra (VA), within the Advanced Computing & ICT Services unit that provides reliable, efficient and secure information systems and ICT infrastructure for the whole research centre. The consultant will join the Information System Hosting area of the infrastructure sector and take on management, implementation and maintenance of the hosting platform: middleware application servers, enterprise file-sharing, identity and security services, containers and automation. The role combines daily operations support with contributing to the design and rollout of new projects and services. The environment is multicultural and multilingual, with strong emphasis on work ethics, diligence and discretion.

MAIN TASKS

• Middleware operations: architect, configure, patch and harden WebLogic and Tomcat deployments; application lifecycle (deployment planning, versioning, rollback); clustering for high availability; JMS configuration; thread/heap dump analysis and JVM/GC tuning
• - Certificates & security: SSL/TLS lifecycle across WebLogic, Apache, Tomcat and OHS; federated identity (SSO, SAML, OAuth/OIDC, JWT); hardening, secrets management, RBAC; reverse proxies, WAF, API gateways and ingress; incident response
• - File-sharing platform: scale and administer the file-sharing service (e.g. ownCloud) with S3-compatible object storage and Redis, antivirus/DLP integration, performance tuning, backup and major-version upgrades without data loss
• - Enterprise systems: design enterprise-grade, fault-tolerant systems and processes, Directory Server / IdP frameworks, hybrid cloud integrations and complex distributed systems
• - Automation & platform: systemd units and Ansible playbooks for deployment and health checks; support to GitLab CI/CD, containers on Kubernetes/OpenShift, databases and PRTG monitoring
• - New services: contribute to the design and implementation of new hosting projects and services alongside day-to-day operations

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

Minimum qualification: secondary degree giving access to higher education and at least 22 years of IT professional experience. Language: English B2 or higher, spoken and written. No security clearance and no certifications required. Candidates not meeting the minimum requirements are rejected. The CV must clearly show years of experience for each area below, cross-referenced to the professional experiences:

• Middleware – Oracle WebLogic, Tomcat (deployment, clustering, SSL/TLS, JMS, JVM/GC tuning): operational, 10 pts (min 7)
• - File-sharing systems – e.g. ownCloud with S3 object storage, Redis, AV/DLP integration: operational, 10 pts (min 7)
• - Enterprise systems – HA / fault tolerance, Directory Servers / IdP, hybrid cloud: operational, 10 pts (min 7)
• - Systems security – PKI/openssl, SSO/SAML/OIDC/JWT, hardening, reverse proxies, WAF, zero-trust: operational, 10 pts (min 7)
• - Relational databases – Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL: basic knowledge, 5 pts
• - DevOps platform – GitLab administration, CI/CD, DevSecOps: basic knowledge, 5 pts
• - Containers & orchestrators – Docker/Podman, Kubernetes, OpenShift: basic knowledge, 5 pts
• - IT systems & automation – Linux, Bash/Python, Ansible, networking: basic knowledge, 5 pts
• - Monitoring – PRTG (sensors, WMI/SSH, maps, maintenance windows): basic knowledge, 5 pts

TECHNICAL PROFILE

• Oracle WebLogic Server, Apache Tomcat, Apache HTTP Server, Oracle HTTP Server (OHS/WebTier), JMS
• - PKI and openssl, SSO / SAML / OAuth-OIDC / JWT, SAST/DAST, nginx / Apache / HAProxy, WAF, API gateways, zero-trust design
• - ownCloud or similar, S3-compatible object storage, Redis, antivirus and DLP engines
• - Linux, Bash and Python scripting, Ansible, systemd; network troubleshooting
• - Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL basic administration (Toad, SQL Developer, pgAdmin, MySQL Workbench)
• - GitLab self-hosted administration and runners, CI/CD and DevSecOps; Docker/Podman, Kubernetes, OpenShift (kubectl, oc, manifests)
• - PRTG monitoring: device tree, standard/WMI/SSH sensors, users and roles, maintenance scheduling, maps

WORKING CONDITIONS

• on-site presence in Ispra 2 days per week; ad hoc presence may be requested with 2 hours' notice – living within commuting distance is essential
• - working days between 7:00 and 20:00, with guaranteed availability 9:30-12:00 and 15:00-16:30 (16:00 on Fridays)
• - start no later than 3 months from contract signature; monthly progress reports and final report
• - signature of the Institution's Ethics reminder and Acceptable Use Policy; any use of AI tools during the assignment requires prior written notice to the client

SELECTION PROCESS

1. CV in English, stating for each expertise area the years of hands-on experience, cross-referenced to the relevant professional experiences (years of experience are the main scoring element).
2. 2. Technical questionnaire: years of experience across 9 technical areas plus 2 open questions on learning new technologies and delivering quality under pressure. At least 7/10 points required in each operational area and 70% overall. Answers must be written personally: the use of AI tools or any external assistance is strictly forbidden and leads to rejection.
3. 3. Possible remote live interview (Teams / Webex, at least 3 working days' notice) to verify the declared expertise. Attendance is mandatory and no external help, including AI tools, is allowed.
